Getting lost in the fight sequences was the biggest surprise of this book. Everybody expects heroes and characters we can all cheer for and this book has several. However the villains have some ambiguity and at times I found myself cheering for them as well. It has its dark, twisted moments that kept me guessing and wondering which side to cheer against. After that, the story just kept getting better. The characters were believable. Even though you love the good guys and hate the bad guys, you can see human motives and weakness in each. The story is set in the "Seventh Empire," an imaginary Asian land rich with culture, history, and intricate martial arts. Here, two forces threaten to tear the world apart-tyranny on the one hand, anarchy on the other. Telsharu, the Cursed has escaped from his hundred-year imprisonment. The entire Seventh Empire is thrown into turmoil as he sets out to finish his century-old mission: assassinate the divinely-appointed emperor. To resist the destructive forces of Telsharu the Cursed, the heroes must decide whether fight against their own enemies, or to stand with their enemies against an even greater threat.
