"A sneaky thrill" according to housefinch. There's something great and sneaky about *tearing* a poem out of a book. We sponsored a group reading from this anthology, and although it began by people reading things they'd chosen beforehand, somehow it evolved into a kind of poetry-roulette: folks tore out a poem without looking at it first, and then read *that* one. I was struck by the really satisfying range of eras and styles, known & unknown writers. Each poem made you listen a different way. It makes a great, implicit argument for inclusivity, surprise. You hear Dickinson's strangeness differently next to Lyn Hejinian's, Yeats nex. Love This! Catherine Montano I loved this anthology of poems for many reasons:(a) there was a wide variety of poems and poets represented, from modern poetry to Shakespeare.(b) though I normally do not like ripping up a book, this is more a sheet of notes than an novel, and it was easy to tear out a poem and keep it in my pocket for the day.(c) 200 poems was quite enough to interest me for almost a year.(d) I love Kay Ryan and her introduction.(e) this is a great way to either learn about poetry, expand one's knowledge on the subject, and/or gather inspiration for one's own poetry. If you are just getting interested in . A dissenting voice I see that all previous reviews of this book are extremely favorable. I am not that enthusiastic. I do not like the idea of tearing a page out of a book. I do not like the way this book looks, and feels. It is heavy and awkward. I also felt many of the poems I read were mediocre. And most often the selections of the most well- known poets were not their best work.Still there are many good poems here. And I wholeheartedly endorse the idea of increasing the number of those who take interest and pleasure in reading poetry.
