The sudden arrival of a former lover, however, threatens to destroy his carefully constructed world. Her uncle Balendran, respectably married, struggles to suppress his secret desire for men. Set among the upper classes in the gracious, repressive world of 1920s Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Cinnamon Gardens tells the brilliantly intertwined stories of two extraordinary characters. And both must draw on hidden reserves to resist the pressures of society and, even more crushing, the expectations they have placed on themselves. She is a teacher, who dreams of being a headmistress, until she learns that because she is not English it can never happen. She hopes to find a loving relationship, but instea. In fact, a good part of my enjoyment of this later book is probably derived from remembering how much I enjoyed the earlier book--from the feeling, you might say, of having another chance to spend virtual time with the author, whom one can't help liking.I was disappointed by occasionally sti
